Kerosene Heater Buying Guide

People from all walks of life can benefit from a reliable and portable kerosene heater. Avid campers and outdoorsmen can surely use a safe source of heat in chilly weather.  Residents of apartments or houses may find that there is a need for extra heat. Perhaps your landlord has failed to provide central heating. Or perhaps there are just some living areas that always seem to be drafty and cold. Keep yourself and your family comfortable this winter with a very small investment in a space heater. You will certainly be glad you did.

Why do you need a space heater?

Space heaters come with many advantages, and people use them in a variety of situations during wintertime, or even on chilly nights. Here are some of the many benefits and uses of a portable space heater:

  • Electricity-free operation – Convenient in power outages, or for outdoor camping and wilderness adventures.
  • Emergency situations – If for whatever reason you have no heat or your building heat is out, you can still keep yourself and your family warm.
  • Secondary heating source – Reduces power and gas bills by supplementing your central heat.
  • Heating a targeted zone – Use in a particularly drafty or chilly area that isn’t well heated.

Advantages of Kerosene

Space heaters come in many types. Electric, propane, or kerosene powered are three very common types of portable heaters. Here are some of the benefits of kerosene powered heaters:

  • No electrical supply needed
  • Burns cleanly and without excessive odor or fumes
  • Inexpensive
  • Long shelf life
  • Easy to store

Different Types of Heating Mechanisms

There are two types of heating mechanisms that are commonly encountered with space heaters: convection and radiant.

  • Convection
Heat is circulated around the room using a small fan to agitate the air. This is a good way to heat an entire room. However you may find that there are still cold spots. If a room is drafty or if a door is opened briefly, you can lose a lot of the benefit of warmth until the heater can catch up again.
  • Radiant
Heat is transferred directly from the heater and designed to warm solid objects or people. Because there is no fan, a radiant heater is much quieter. Although it is very poor at heating the air itself, you will quickly feel a difference in temperature and be more comfortable. It is perceived to be more cost-efficient to operate than a convection style heater. When using a radiant style heater, you want to be sure to stay in the direct path of the radiated heat to get the full benefits.

How Much Heat Do You Need?

Heat output is often given in BTUs. A BTU is defined as the amount of energy needed to heat one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Here is how you can know how much heat you will need. Consider the space you plan to heat with the portable heater. Multiply its floor area by its height to get volume. Multiply volume by 4 (for poorly insulated spaces) or by 2 (for well insulated spaces). The resulting number is an approximation of how many BTUs you might want your heater to produce.

Proper Operation & Maintenance

There are many common complaints that people have about kerosene heaters. In addition, people fear that kerosene heaters can be a fire hazard. But as long as you are responsible and follow manufacturer instructions, you will find that most of these issues are easily resolved.

  • Fuel
Only use the fuel type recommended by the manufacturer. Typically this will be water-clear K-1 kerosene. Failure to use the right fuel will reduce the heater’s effectiveness and efficiency. In addition, you should not expect that kerosene that has been stored over the summer will still be good.
  • Odor
It is normal for a kerosene heater to give off odor during start-up and shut-down. Odor should be minimal when the heater has been operating for 5-10 minutes. The first time you start your heater there may be a more noticeable smell due to manufacturing byproducts.
  • Filling the Tank
Fill the tank outdoors. Not only is this safer, but it helps to remove odor because a lot of the strong kerosene odor and fumes are generated during refills.
  • Wick
If you are starting the heater for the first time, or any time after the tank has been dry, allow 60 minutes after fueling for the wick to absorb the kerosene. Often you will be required to bring the wick to its maximum height for ignition. In about 5 minutes, and periodically thereafter, you’ll need to adjust the wick to the optimal level. Additionally, regular wick maintenance is extremely important to prevent build-up and allow the wick to ignite quickly and evenly.
  • Fumes
A properly maintained heater should burn cleanly and efficiently without a lot of fumes or odor. If you are seeing a lot of smoke and soot, or noticing significant odor, the problem may be the height of the wick. Ensure that the wick is properly adjusted. Smoke and soot can also be caused by carbon and tar build-up on the wick, or contaminated kerosene.
  • Fire Prevention
    • Follow all the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure you are properly using and maintaining your heater.
    • Never leave the heater unattended, or leave it on while you sleep.
    • Choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed.
    • Many models have extra safety features to help reduce the risk of fire.
    • Keep combustible and household items at least 3 feet from the heater on all sides.
    • Have a working smoke detector and fire extinguisher in an easily accessible area.
